Sixth International Conference on Case Writing: Leadership in Action

Hear ye! Hear ye! CWAM is going to have another conference soon.

The main purpose of the Conference is to provide case writers with an opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences related to case writing for publication. Both first time case writers and seasoned case writers are encouraged to attend this Conference.

Besides the narratives of the hallmarks of leadership, in conjunction with the Conference, it has been customary to invite writers to submit original written cases (preferably in an Asian setting) from all disciplines as in business, education, hard and social sciences and others used for training, to participate in this Case Competition as an additional incentive for capturing the interest in the Conference.

To further reinforce the practicalities of leadership, the focus for the Case Competition could be on cases relating to elements of leadership.

The organizing committee will select three to five winners to receive the following awards:

• Prize money of :

RM3,000: 1st Prize

RM2,000: 2nd Prize
RM1,000: 3rd Prizes (x5)

• Selected cases will be published in any of CWAM’s publications or Putra Business School (PBS)’s Asian Journal of Case Research.

• All contestants will receive certificates of participation.

• Registration fee for the Case Competition: RM50

Our Past Conferences.

CWAM has been organizing Case Conferences for many years now. Its First International Conference in 2006 on Case Study Teaching and Learning was entitled ‘The Case for the Case Method: Learning from Experience.’ This was followed by the Second International Conference on Case Writing in Action in 2008 with the theme, ‘The Underlying Dynamics of the Case Method.’

In 2011, CWAM handled its Third International Conference on Case Writing with the title, ‘Innovative Case Writing Techniques that Facilitate Interactive Teaching  and Learning: Emerging Trends.’ The Fourth International Conference on Case Writing by CWAM was on ‘The Value of the Case Study as a Research Strategy,’ and it was held in 2013. Two years after that, in 2015, CWAM conducted its Fifth International Conference on Case Writing with the theme ‘Writing and the Perils of Publishing Cases.’

This year, CWAM is expected to organize another Case Conference. We hope to be able to continue providing the case writers with an opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences related to case research. Hope to see you there!

Case Writers' Association of Malaysia: Our Story.

Prior to the establishment of CWAM, managers in the Malaysian public sector , the private sector and institutions of higher learning had little choice but to use foreign cases, mainly from USA and UK, for the purpose of teaching and learning from the case study method. At times, some of these foreign cases were found to be culturally incompatible with the local social norms and values, rendering them less effective than the intended objectives. Consequently, a group of people who attended a case trainers' workshop conducted by Professor Martin Laurence in 1985, decided to form a case writers' association. Thus, the Case Writers' Association of Malaysia came into being in 1986 with the aim of encouraging the development of local cases which are relevant, suitable and useful for Malaysian managers, officials and trainers.

The Objectives of CWAM:
  1. To encourage the writing of original Malaysian management cases;
  2. To provide a platform for strengthening and furthering the art of management case writing through training programmes in Malaysia;
  3. To set standards of approval for the cases submitted;
  4. To eventually carry out the functions of a Case Clearing House;
  5. To assist in related areas such as case writing competitions, publication of cases, case workshops and evaluation of new cases submitted; and
  6. To participate in any activity that will contribute towards the development of case writing in Malaysia.
